THE LESSON
The meaning of the title on The Lesson
The meaning of the title the lesson is related with exchange between two persons, they are among professor and a pupil, which the information are reduced to meaningless and disturbing verbiage. The meaningless of meaning and the way we embalm ourselves in knowledge are main of The Lesson. How much of you know that you really understood and have you merely absorbed. That is the audience who are supposed to learn.
The professor underestimate to the pupil, who is eager, cleaver, and enthusiastic to learn the stage is nothing. In the centre two chairs face each other; against the far wall stands a small, white, house-shaped structure. This is that Marie issue forth to give cryptic warnings to professor and pupil. The end, when it comes, is abrupt and mysterious, Teachers are not supposed to dismiss you in a state of non-comprehension. The play is difficult, both to watch and to perform. Through you may leave the classroom, your mind remains with the lesson. We can conclude that everything in human life is a lesson. Anything that we get will become the lesson for our life.
The character on the lesson
It is contain three main characters in the lesson. There are the young pupil aged 18, the professor, aged 50-60, and the maid, aged 45 to 50, the maid, Marie, always warns the professor about his “health” and calamity that might happen.
The messages from the lesson are how to become player on the drama that in the lesson shows us status versus control. In this play the professor is insane. His explanation does not make sense at all when he explains about philology. It seems bizarre when they discussed the subtraction the pupil suddenly becomes stupid, while in fact she is very clever in multiplication. Then we can see that the way to portrayal of control and status. As seen in Indonesian that professor underestimates for the pupil as a person who is stupid.
The theme in the lesson
The theme is among man and man and the society. This play, by Ionesco is a drama that satirizes totalitarianism in education, politics, language, psychology, and sexuality. The play is set in the study of a professor who tutors one student at a time.
The synopsis of the lesson
This play act is about status and control. We see a confident young girl come for lessons from a renowned professor. She dominates the Professor at the beginning with her youth and confidence, but soon the Professor begins to take over control of the girl until at the end she is killed by him, with the assistance of his housekeeper, and the stage is set to begin again with another young girl. The play is designed to be performed cyclically so that the end is really the beginning and the inevitable play of wits between youth and age, power and manipulation is staged over and over again as a part of the game of life itself. Another thing is the repetitive scenes which show that the pupil gets a toothache, headache, earache, and eyes ache. Every time the pupil complains, the professor ignores her. Meanwhile, the maid always warns the professor every time the pupil complains about her aches that the symptom already started, but the professor always ignores her warnings. The only feature clearly seen is that the characters in this play have the feature of commedia dell arte: stupid master and clever servant. Therefore, this play is considered as comic tragedy. This advertisement reminds me to the professor in Indonesia, it might be the senior citizens, cleverer people, those who have power or higher status, and those who have the characteristics as a professor, who are considered trustworthy and well-experienced. Others who are called as the pupil, are not considered trustworthy, therefore they are not allowed to speak. Whenever the pupil speaks, people will not listen to her/him and they the pupil will be considered as inexperienced.
